Women’s Tennis Claims Crucial 5-4 Win at Colby-Sawyer
NEW LONDON, N.H.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team captured a narrow 5-4 victory at defending GNAC champion Colby-Sawyer Wednesday.
The Lions climb to 4-0 on the year and 2-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference with the win. The Chargers fall to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in league action with the result.
Colby-Sawyer posted a pair of doubles victories to nab a 2-1 lead in the match.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) blanked Amira Eid and Juliet Henderson 8-0 at the No. 2 doubles position.
Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) and Magdalena Hubel (Berlin, Germany) dropped an 8-2 decision at the top slot to Yashu Yang and Alexa Conlin.
Maria Busila (Malaga, Spain) and Makayla Grantham (Apalachian, N.Y.) absorbed an 8-6 setback at the No. 3 spot to Margaret Fox and Hannah Nasser.
Eastern Nazarene battled back with four singles wins to secure its fourth-consecutive victory.
Ruttkowski topped Conlin 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 2 singles spot while Hubel bested Eid 6-3, 6-3 at the third slot.
Busila notched a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 position over Henderson and Jimenez rolled past Fox 6-0, 6-0 in the fifth singles match.
Biondi suffered a 6-2, 6-0 setback at the top singles spot to Yang while Grantham fell in three sets at the No. 6 position to Nasser.
