Women’s Tennis Posts 7-2 Win Over Salve Regina on Senior Day
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team topped Salve Regina 7-2 Tuesday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts. Prior to the start of the match, the Lions recognized the program's seniors: Jacquelin Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.), Adele Duval (Redding, Calif.), Annelise Sherrill (Elk Grove, Calif.), and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.).
The Lions improve to 13-4 on the year with the victory while the Seahawks fall to 5-7 overall.
The home side seized a 2-1 edge with a pair of wins in doubles action.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Arretche downed Laura Krick and Annemarie Haas 8-1 at the No. 2 doubles position.
Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) and Sherrill earned an 8-3 win over Shealyn FitzPatrick and Lily Gorman at the third slot.
Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) and Duval dropped an 8-4 decision at the top spot to Lauren Harvey and Abigail Burke.
Eastern Nazarene tallied five singles victories to lock up its 13th win of the season.
Biondi outlasted Harvey in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 1 singles position. After conceding the first frame 6-2, Biondi bounced back to claim the second set 6-3 before edging Harvey in the super-tiebreaker 12-10.
Ruttkowski rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot over Burke to collect her team-leading 16th victory.
Duval picked up her 12th singles win of the year with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 slot over Krick.
Arretche notched a narrow victory in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the fourth position against Haas. After Haas captured the opening set 6-2, Arretche prevailed 7-6 in the second and 10-8 in the super-tiebreaker.
Jimenez bested FitzPatrick in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 5 spot. FitzPatrick claimed the first set 6-3 and Jimenez clawed back to coast to a 6-0 win in the second frame. In the super-tiebreaker, Jimenez triumphed 10-7.
Sherrill suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback at the sixth singles slot against Gorman.
