Women’s Tennis Defeats Albion, 7-2, in Spring Break Opener
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- In its first match in the Palmetto State, the Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team topped Albion 7-2 Monday.
The Lions improve to 11-2 on the year with the win while the Britons slip to 2-2 overall.
Adele Duval (Redding, Calif.) and Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) downed Kathryn Valade and Lauren Solano 8-3 at the top doubles spot.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) cruised to an 8-0 win over Saige Jost and Madeline Samra at the No. 2 position.
Karla Polanco (Revere, Mass.) and Annelise Sherrill (Elk Grove, Calif.) absorbed an 8-4 setback to Eleanor Debo and Namara Swillum at the third slot.
Ruttkowski rolled past Valade at the No. 2 singles spot in straight sets while Duval breezed by Jost at the third position 6-1, 6-1.
Jimenez topped Samra at the No. 4 slot 6-3, 6-0 and Sherrill earned a 6-3, 7-6 victory at the No. 5 spot against Swillum.
Polanco outlasted Debo in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the sixth position. After dropping the opening set 6-4, Polanco rebounded to claim the second frame 6-2 before prevailing 10-2 in the super-tiebreaker.
Biondi fell at the top singles slot to Solano in a third-set super-tiebreaker. Biondi conceded the first set 6-1 and stormed back to take the second set 7-5. Solano clipped Biondi 10-5 in the super-tiebreaker.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will face St. John Fisher March 5.
