Women’s Tennis Falls to Colby-Sawyer 6-2
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team absorbed its first loss of the season Wednesday afternoon, falling 6-2 to Colby-Sawyer at the ENC Tennis Courts.
The Lions slip to 10-1 on the year and wraps up conference play at 6-1 to grab the No. 2 seed in the GNAC Tournament. The Chargers improve to 8-2 overall and claim the No. 1 seed in the GNAC playoffs with a 7-0 record.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Jacquelin Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) earned Eastern Nazarene's lone doubles victory on the day, prevailing 8-6 at the No. 2 spot over Maddy Gemerek and Aislinn O'Connor.
Adele Duval (Redding, Calif.) and Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) suffered an 8-3 setback at the top position against Yashu Yang and Anna Kopituk.
Veronica Jimenez (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) narrowly fell at the No. 3 slot to Hilary Boucher and Michelle Lopes 8-6.
Ruttkowski recorded the Lions' only win in singles play as she improved to 11-0 on the season with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at the No. 2 position against Gemerek.
Biondi endured a 6-3, 6-3 loss at the No. 1 spot to Yang while Duval fell 6-1, 6-1 at the third slot to O'Connor and Jimenez dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Kopituk in the fourth singles match.
Arretche fell in a closely-contested three-set match at the No. 5 position to Boucher. Arretche captured the first set 6-3 before Boucher bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second before eking out a 10-8 victory in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Annelise Sherrill (Elk Grove, Calif.) held a 3-0 lead in the second set when the match was called but trailed by a set after dropping the opener 6-3 to Lopes.
