Women’s Tennis Edges Johnson & Wales 5-4 to Secure GNAC Playoff Bye
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team earned a 5-4 victory over Johnson & Wales Tuesday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts to lock up a top-two finish in the league standings and a first-round bye in the GNAC Tournament.
The Lions improve to 10-0 on the year and 6-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) with the win. The Wildcats sink to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in league competition with the result.
The home side snagged a 2-1 lead after doubles play on Monday before a weather delay.
Adele Duval (Redding, Calif.) and Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) collected a 9-7 victory over Delaney Macchirole and Kourtney Moore at the top position.
Jacquelin Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) and Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) downed Claire Parry and Drew Bobey 8-3 at the No. 2 spot.
Veronica Jimenez (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Annelise Sherrill (Elk Grove, Calif.) suffered an 8-3 setback at the No. 3 slot to Lauren Torre and Katherine Ledesma.
The two teams returned to the courts Tuesday to conclude the match with singles action. Eastern Nazarene claimed three singles wins to seal its 10th-straight victory.
Biondi topped Parry 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles position. Ruttkowski notched her team-leading 10th singles victory of the fall as she rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win at the second slot over Torre.
Duval clinched the match with a three-set win at the No. 3 singles position over Macchirole. Duval captured the first frame 6-4 before Macchirole pulled even with a 6-2 decision in the second. In the decisive third set, Duval downed Macchirole 7-5.
Jimenez, Arretche, and Sherrill dropped straight-set decisions at the fourth, fifth, and sixth singles spots, respectively.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene hosts Colby-Sawyer October 10 in a showdown between the conference's top two teams. Both squads enter the match with 6-0 marks in league competition.
