Women’s Tennis Stays Undefeated with 6-3 Win over Suffolk
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team defeated Suffolk 6-3 Saturday at the ENC Tennis Courts to keep its unblemished record intact.
The Lions, off to the best start since 1990, improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) with the victory. The Rams drop to 2-6 on the season and 1-3 in league matches with the loss.
The home team scored a pair of doubles wins to claim a 2-1 lead.
Adele Duval (Reading, Calif.) and Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) rattled off their fifth-consecutive victory at the top doubles spot, prevailing 8-5 over Delaney Dunlap and Ilda Ascic.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Jacquelin Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) downed Elena Cisneros Garcia and Kendall Smith 8-2 at the No. 2 position.
Veronica Jimenez (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) absorbed an 8-3 loss at the third slot to Meagan French and Jordan Miller.
Eastern Nazarene earned four victories in singles action to lock up its fifth-straight win, the team's longest winning-streak since 1997.
Biondi notched a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 singles position over Dunlap to improve to 5-0 on the year.
Ruttkowski rolled past Ascic 6-1, 6-1 at the second spot to collect her team-high fifth singles win of the season.
At the No. 3 singles position, Duval outlasted Cisneros Garcia in three sets to pick up her fifth singles victory. After dropping the first set 6-4, Duval stormed back to capture the second 6-0 and prevail 6-3 in the third frame.
Jimenez rallied to top Smith in three sets at the No. 4 slot to claim her second-consecutive victory. The sophomore conceded the opening set 6-4 and battled back to seize the second 6-3. In the deciding third frame, Jimenez triumphed 6-3.
Annelise Sherrill (Elk Grove, Calif.) suffered a 6-3, 7-5 setback at the fifth position to French and Tubbs fell 6-1, 6-4 to Miller in the sixth singles match.
