Women’s Tennis Blanked by NAIA Top-10 Team William Woods
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team fell to William Woods 9-0 at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center Thursday.
The Lions slip to 11-8 on the year with the loss while the Owls, ranked No. 9 in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, improve to 6-3 overall.
Adele Duval (Reading, Calif.) and Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) absorbed an 8-1 setback at the No. 1 doubles spot to Zlata Shuraeva and Ana Zavala.
Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) dropped an 8-1 decision to Julia Mulder and Abigail Lemberger at the second position.
Veronica Jimenez (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) fell to Paige Smith and Karyna Sagalai 8-0 in the No. 3 slot.
Ruttkowski narrowly fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the top singles position. After Ruttkowski claimed the first set 6-3, Julia Perez Wienese leveled the match with a 6-1 win in the second before edging Ruttkowski 10-8 in the super-tiebreaker.
Duval, Steelman, Jimenez, Cressman, and Annelise Sherrill (Elk Grove, Calif.) all suffered straight-set setbacks in singles action.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene closes out its trip to the Palmetto State March 9 against Lynchburg.
