Women’s Tennis Edges St. John Fisher, 5-4
HILTON HEAD, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team collected a 5-4 victory over St. John Fisher to start its spring slate in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Monday.
The Lions climb to 11-6 on the year while the Cardinals fall to 9-5 overall.
Eastern Nazarene produced a 2-1 lead with a pair of doubles wins.
Adele Duval (Reading, Calif.) and Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) earned an 8-3 victory at the top doubles position over Cassidy Bell and Kaili Saffran.
Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynnfield, Mass.) triumphed 9-7 at the No. 2 spot against Amanda Pendergast and Sarah Sorrentino.
Annelise Sherrill (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) suffered an 8-5 setback at the No. 3 slot to Caroline Seaberg and Grace Peter.
The two teams each notched three victories in singles play as the Lions held on to top St. John Fisher 5-4.
Ruttkowski cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 1 singles position while Duval rolled past Taylor Slink 6-1, 6-0 at the second spot.
Steelman rallied past Sorrentino at the No. 3 position in a third-set super-tiebreaker 10-8. The senior dropped the first set 6-3 but bounced back to prevail 6-1 in the second.
Jimenez, Tubbs, and Sherrill fell in straight sets at the fourth, fifth, and sixth singles matches, respectively.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene returns to the courts March 6 to battle Baldwin Wallace.
