Women’s Tennis Edged by Bridgewater State on Senior Day
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team endured its first non-conference loss of the season Thursday afternoon, narrowly falling to Bridgewater State 5-4 at the ENC Tennis Courts.
The Lions move to 10-5 on the season with the outcome while the Bears improve to 10-5 overall.
Prior to the start of the match, the Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis program honored its three seniors: Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.), Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.), and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.).
The visitors clung to a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Steelman rolled past Alisha Silva and Amanda Strickland 8-0 at the No. 1 position for the home team's lone doubles win.
Adele Duval (Reading, Calif.) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) suffered a narrow 8-6 loss at the No. 2 spot to Bojana Roman and Alison Scagnelli.
Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) and Cressman fell at the third slot to Olivia Sweeney and Rachel Tarantino 8-4.
Both teams notched three singles victories as Bridgewater State halted the Lions' winning-streak at four matches.
Ruttkowski cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win at the top position over Silva while Duval downed Roman 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 slot and Steelman won via retirement after capturing the first set 6-0 at the third spot.
Cressman dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision at the No. 4 position to Strickland and Tubbs endurded a 6-2, 6-0 setback at the No. 6 spot to Tarantino.
In the No. 5 singles match, Jimenez fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker against Sweeney. After dropping the first frame in a tiebreaker, Jimenez stormed back to claim the second set 10-3 before falling 10-4 in the super-tiebreaker.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene resumes its chase for the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship. The Lions, seeded fifth in the CCC Tournament, travels to top-seeded Nichols October 17 for a semifinal showdown.
