Women’s Tennis Drops Pivotal CCC Match at Gordon Saturday
BEVERLY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team suffered a 6-3 setback to Gordon Saturday at Bass River Tennis Club.
The Lions fall to 6-4 on the year and 3-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the loss. The Fighting Scots improve to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in league matches.
Gordon grabbed a 2-1 advantage with a pair of victories in doubles play.
Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) edged Gabrielle Brucker and Justine Hanson 9-7 at the No. 2 position.
Adele Duval (Reading, Calif.) and Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) dropped a narrow 8-6 decision to Kaelyn Hall and Maddie Berry at the top spot.
Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) absorbed an 8-3 loss at the No. 3 slot to Katherine Jeffreys and Caitlin Kwok.
The Fighting Scots notched four singles wins en route to securing the vital conference victory.
Biondi collected a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 1 singles position over Hanson.
Duval outlasted Hall in a three-set battle at the No. 3 spot. Duval claimed the first set 6-4 before Hall answered with a 6-1 victory in the second frame. Dual rebounded to prevail 6-4 in the deciding third set to record her team-leading eighth singles win of the fall.
Ruttkowski dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Jeffreys at the No. 2 slot while Steelman fell at the No. 4 position 6-2, 7-5 to Berry.
Cressman suffered a 6-1, 6-1 setback at the fifth spot and Jimenez endured a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Kwok at the sixth position.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene visits Mount Ida October 2.
