Women’s Tennis Posts First-Ever Win Over Western New England
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team topped Western New England 6-3 for the first time in program history on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions rise to 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the victory. The Golden Bears drop to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in league matches with the loss.
The visitors chalked up a pair of doubles wins to establish a 2-1 lead.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) downed Morgan Schrader and Christina D'Agostino at the No. 1 doubles position 8-3.
Adele Duval (Reading, Calif.) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) cruised to an 8-0 win at the No. 2 spot over Maylene LaPress and Petra Martinelli.
Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) fell to Rachel Bauer and Kim Phu 8-5 at the third slot.
Eastern Nazarene collected wins at the top four singles positions to clinch its fifth victory of the fall.
Biondi breezed by LaPress at the top singles spot 6-2, 6-0 and Ruttkowski earned a 7-5, 6-1 win at the second slot over Schrader.
Duval defeated D'Agostino 6-1, 6-4 at the third position while Steelman coasted past Bauer 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles match.
Cressman fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the fifth spot to Martinelli. After capturing the first set 6-2, Cressman dropped the second 7-6 before Martinelli prevailed 10-5 in the super-tiebreaker.
Jimenez suffered a straight-sets setback at the sixth slot against Jessica Cote 6-1, 6-3.
