Women’s Tennis Surges Past Wentworth 7-2
WESTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team collected its second-straight victory with a 7-2 win over Wentworth Saturday afternoon at Regis College.
The Lions improve to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Leopards fall to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in league matches.
Eastern Nazarene swept all three doubles matches to claim a 3-0 lead heading into singles action.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Emily Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) downed Ali Sollecito and Ellen Butts 8-3 at the top doubles spot.
Adele Duval (Redding, Calif.) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) posted an 8-2 victory at the No. 2 position over Sam Webb and Caitlyn Briggs.
Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) edged Sam McGibbon and Mackenzie Jones 8-6 at the third slot.
The Lions captured four wins in singles play to remain undefeated on the season.
Ruttkowski cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 singles spot over Briggs.
Duval topped Webb 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 3 position and Steelman bested Butts 6-0, 6-4 in the fourth singles match.
Cressman notched a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 5 singles slot against Jasmine Andrade.
Biondi narrowly fell to Sollecito in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the top position. Biondi triumphed 6-4 in the first set before Sollecito grabbed the second set 7-5 and clinched the match with a 10-8 decision in the super-tiebreaker.
Up next, the Lions eye their third win in a row as they return to the courts September 12 to host non-league foe Regis.
