Women’s Tennis Edged by Lebanon Valley, 5-4
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team absorbed a 5-4 loss to Lebanon Valley Thursday afternoon.
The Lions sink to 4-14 on the year while the Dutchwomen improve to 4-2 overall with the outcome.
Lebanon Valley recorded two doubles victories to carve out a 2-1 advantage.
Sharon Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Adele Duval (Redding, Calif.) collected Eastern Nazarene's lone doubles win as the tandem topped Marla Scacchitti and Melanie Haas 8-2 at the No. 1 position.
Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Jacquelin Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) suffered an 8-4 setback at the second slot to Rebecca Pierpont and Megan Williams.
At the No. 3 spot, Courtney McCarthy (Merrimack, N.H.) and Annelise Sherrill (Elk Grove, Calif.) rallied from a 5-0 deficit to pull even at 8-8 before dropping the tiebreaker as Elise Hanks-Witaszek and Elizabeth Drda escaped with a 9-8 decision.
Both teams registered three singles wins as the Dutchwomen narrowly prevailed to snap their two-match skid.
Biondi picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Scacchitti at the top singles position. Duval edged Pierpoint in two tiebreakers at the No. 2 spot to claim her team-leading ninth singles victory of the season 7-6, 7-6.
Steelman outlasted Haas in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 3 slot. After Haas eked out a 7-6 win in the first set, Steelman battled back to capture the second 6-2 before doubling up Haas in the super-tiebreaker 10-5.
Arretche narrowly fell at the No. 4 position to Drda 7-6, 6-4 while Sherrill and McCarthy dropped straight-set decisions in the fifth and sixth singles matches, respectively.
