Women’s Tennis Nets First Victory at Lesley Thursday, 5-4
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team captured its first win of the season Thursday evening, edging Lesley 5-4.
The Lions improve to 1-2 overall while the Lynx fall to 0-1 on the year.
The visitors faced a 2-1 deficit at the conclusion of doubles play.
Adele Duval (Redding, Calif.) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) posted an 8-5 victory over Caroline Kiddie and Theresa Pereira at the No. 1 doubles position.
Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) fell to Carlyn Barker and Maddie Abbott at the second spot, 8-3. Julie Sutton (Middletown, Conn.) and Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) absorbed an 8-3 loss at the third slot to Frances De Leon and Jessica Russo.
Eastern Nazarene stormed back in singles action to secure its first win of the 2016 campaign.
Duval bested Kiddie at the top singles position 6-3, 6-1. Steelman breezed by Abbott 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles match.
Jimenez notched her first collegiate victory with a three-set decision at the No. 4 slot against De Leon. The rookie prevailed in the first frame 6-4 before dropping the second 6-4. Jimenez bounced back to claim the decisive third set 6-1 to earn her first win.
Lariviere collected her first singles win of the fall, topping Courtney Goggin in straight sets at the sixth position, 6-0, 6-4.
Cressman battled valiantly at the No. 3 spot but came up short in three sets against Barker. Cressman grabbed the opening set 6-3 but Barker responded with a 6-3 win in the second frame and a 6-4 decision in the third.
Sutton suffered a 6-0, 6-3 setback to Pereira at the No. 5 singles slot.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene resumes conference play September 10 with a road match at Nichols.
