Women’s Tennis Absorbs Season-Opening Loss at Regis, 8-1
WESTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision at Regis College Friday afternoon in the first match of the 2016-17 season.
The Lions dip to 0-1 on the year while the Pride improved to 1-0 overall with the result.
The home team swept the three doubles matches to grab a 3-0 lead.
Adele Duval (Redding, Calif.) and Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.) suffered an 8-1 setback at the top doubles spot to Jesse Lord and Ariana McCormack.
Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) were edged by Erica Murphy and Cary Scanlon 9-7 at the No. 2 doubles position.
Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) and Julie Sutton (Middletown, Conn.) fell to Amy DiPace and Emily Rice 8-2 in the third doubles match.
Duval recorded the visitors' lone victory on the day, prevailing at the No. 1 singles slot 6-4, 6-2 over Murphy.
Steelman narrowly fell to Lord at the second spot in a third-set super-tiebreaker. The junior dropped the opening set 6-2 before bouncing back to claim the second frame 6-2. Steelman came up just short in the third-set super-tiebreaker, 11-9.
Cressman and Jimenez both endured 6-0, 6-0 losses at the third and fourth singles positions, respectively. Sutton dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision at the fifth slot while Lariviere fell 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 slot.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene returns home to open conference play against Gordon September 3.
