Women’s Tennis Competes at UMass-Boston Invitational Saturday
BOSTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team placed third at the second annual UMass-Boston Invitational Saturday.
The Lions collected 3.5 points to finish in third behind UMass-Boston and Johnson & Wales while edging Wentworth.
Adele Duval (Redding, Calif.) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) represented Eastern Nazarene in the singles competition.
Steelman won the consolation bracket with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Johnson & Wales' Lauren Torre. Steelman dropped her opening match to Morgan Thompson of Johnson & Wales 6-4, 6-2. The sophomore bounced back with a 6-1, 6-3 win over UMass-Boston's Logan Smith in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
Duval cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Wentworth's Emily Jodoin in the first round before falling to eventual champion Kristy Garcia 6-2, 7-6 (1) in the semifinals of the main draw.
The Lions fielded two tandems in the doubles bracket as Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) teamed with Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) while Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) partnered with Julie Sutton (Middletown, Conn.).
Burrello and Cressman prevailed in the consolation bracket with an 8-1 victory over Lariviere and Sutton.
After suffering an 8-4 first-round loss to Johnson & Wales' Samantha Gambino and Delaney Macchirole, Burrello and Cressman posted an 8-3 win over Nurcin Celebi and Meghan Erickson from UMass-Boston in the consolation semifinals.
Lariviere and Sutton dropped an 8-6 decision to Eliana Aponte and Bridget Bertone of Johnson & Wales in the opening round. The duo rebounded to down Wentworth's Mackenzie Jones and Rina Rivera Vargas 8-3 to reach the consolation finale.
The Beacons captured the overall team title after garnering the singles and doubles individual champions. The Wildcats finished in a close second place while Wentworth rounded out the field in fourth.
