Women’s Tennis Narrowly Falls to Marietta, 5-4
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team absorbed a 5-4 loss to Marietta Tuesday in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
The Lions slip to 4-10 overall while the Pioneers improve to 3-5 on the year.
Eastern Nazarene captured a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches.
The All-Commonwealth Coast Conference tandem of Adele Duval (Dallas, Texas) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) posted their team-leading eighth doubles win of the year, prevailing 8-4 at the top spot over Carey Becker and Alex Seals.
Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) eked out an 8-6 victory over Hannah Stankus and Elyssa Ackerman at the No. 2 position.
Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) downed Mandy Young and Latrice Nelson in a tiebreaker to earn a 9-8 win at the third slot.
Marietta stormed back in singles action, grabbing five victories to escape with its first win of the spring.
Steelman collected the Lions lone singles victory on the day, topping Ackerman at the No. 2 position 6-1, 6-1.
Duval dropped a closely-contest three-set match at the top singles slot. After conceding the first set 6-3, Duval evened the match with a 6-4 win in the second. Ackerman edged Duval in a third-set super-tiebreaker 10-8.
Burrello also suffered a three-set loss at the third spot to Seals. Burrello dropped the opening frame 6-4 and seized the second set 6-2 before falling 10-7 in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Cressman suffered a 6-0, 6-2 setback at the No. 4 position and Julie Sutton (Middletown, Conn.) endured an 8-6 pro-set loss at the sixth slot.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will look for its first win in the Palmetto State as it takes on Emory & Henry March 9.
