Women’s Tennis Defeated at Western New England, 8-1
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision at Western New England Saturday afternoon.
The Lions slide to 3-5 on the year and 1-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the loss. The Golden Bears improve to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in league matches.
The guests' lone victory in the match came at the No. 1 doubles spot. Adele Duval (Dallas, Texas) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) notched an 8-3 win over Joanna Glantz and Lauren Sell. With their fifth-consecutive victory, the tandem improves to 5-1 on the season.
Christina D'Agostino and Kelly Byrnes edged Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) at the second doubles position, 9-7. Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) and Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) fell to Alice Mathews and Kim Phu 8-2 at the third slot.
Western New England swept all six singles matches to secure its second league win of the fall.
Duval narrowly fell to Sell at the top singles match in a third-set super-tiebreaker. Duval clinched the first set 6-4 before Sell responded with a 6-4 victory in the second frame. Duval came up just short in the super-tiebreaker, falling 10-8 to sell.
Steelman also dropped a closely-contested match at the No. 2 singles position to Glantz. The sophomore captain prevailed in the first set 6-4 before Glantz leveled the match with a 6-2 decision in the second before edging Steelman in the super-tiebreaker 12-10.
Burrello, Cressman, Tubbs all lost in straight sets at the third, fourth and fifth single spots, respectively.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene continues conference play September 22 as it hosts Roger Williams.
