Women’s Tennis Earns First Win Over Wentworth Since 2007 Saturday, 6-3
WESTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team topped Wentworth Saturday for the first time since 2007, prevailing 6-3 at Regis College's tennis courts.
The Lions rise to 2-3 on the fall and 1-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the win. The Leopards slide to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Eastern Nazarene notched a pair of doubles victories to jump out to a 2-1 lead.
The Lions' No. 1 doubles pair of Adele Duval (Dallas, Texas) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) downed Caitlyn Briggs and Emily Jodoin 8-2. Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) secured an 8-4 win at the No. 2 position over Ellen Butts and Nicole McColgan.
Eastern Nazarene claimed four victories in singles play to lock up its first conference win of the season.
Duval outlasted Briggs in three sets at the No. 1 spot to pick up her team-leading third singles victory of the fall. The rookie glided to a 6-1 win in the first set before Briggs battled back to take the second 6-4. Duval rebounded in the third set to capture a 6-2 win.
Steelman defeated McColgan at the No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-1 to grab her first victory in singles action this season.
Burrello triumphed in straight sets at the third singles position to earn her first singles win of the year, downing Jodoin 6-3, 6-1.
Julie Sutton (Middletown, Conn.) edged Sam Webb in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 6 singles slot. Sutton conceded the first set 7-5 before storming back to win the second 6-4. The senior eked out a 10-8 victory in a third-set super-tiebreaker to post her team-leading third singles victory of the fall.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene returns home to battle non-conference foe UMass-Boston September 17.
