Women’s Tennis Knocked Off by Nichols, 7-2
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback to Nichols Tuesday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts.
The Lions dip to 1-3 on the year and 0-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the loss. The Bison improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play with the win.
After claiming one doubles victory, the hosts faced a 2-1 deficit heading into singles play.
Adele Duval (Dallas, Texas) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) downed Nichols' Lauren Candia and Ashley Dallaire 8-6 at the No. 1 doubles position.
Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) dropped an 8-2 decision at the second spot to Cristina Szepanski and Daniela Saldarriaga. Julie Sutton (Middletown, Conn.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) fell to Emma Carey and Michelle Keklik at the third doubles match, 8-0.
The Bison managed to collect five singles wins to lock up their first conference victory of the fall.
Eastern Nazarene's lone singles win came at the No. 6 position as Sutton outlasted Morgan Hiersche in a third-set super-tiebreaker 10-5. Sutton claimed the opening set 6-2 before dropping the second 6-3.
Steelman came up short at the No. 2 singles slot, falling in a third-set super-tiebreaker. After conceding the tiebreaker in the first set as Szepanski prevailed 7-6, Steelman stormed back to capture the second set 6-1. The sophomore captain endured a 10-4 loss in the third-set super-tiebreaker.
Duval narrowly fell to Candia in the No. 1 singles match, 6-4, 6-2.
Looking ahead, the Lions wrap up the four-match home-stand against Lesley September 10.
