Women’s Tennis Drops Conference Opener to Salve Regina, 8-1
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 setback to Salve Regina in the first league match of the season Saturday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts.
The Lions slide to 1-2 on the year and 0-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Seahawks improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) secured the home team's lone victory on the day, posting a 9-8 win at the No. 2 doubles position over Taylor Amendola and Caroline Rodman.
Adele Duval (Dallas, Texas) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) dropped an 8-4 decision to Emma Gruber and Kasey Walther at the top doubles spot. Julie Sutton (Middletown, Conn.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) fell to Courtney Bailey and Cristina Marsocci at the third doubles slot, 8-2.
In her first match back from injury, Steelman absorbed a narrow loss in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the second singles position. After conceding the first set 6-2, the sophomore captain stormed back to claim the second set 7-5 over Gruber. In the third-set super-tiebreaker, Gruber edged Steelman 10-8.
Duval dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 decision at the No. 1 singles match to Walther.
