Women’s Tennis Topped by Wentworth in Home Finale, 8-1
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 setback to Wentworth Institute of Technology in the final home match of the 2014 season Tuesday.
The Lions drop to 2-8 on the year and 1-5 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the loss. The Leopards improve to 3-7 overall and 2-4 in league matches with the victory.
The visitors tallied three doubles wins to grab a 3-0 lead.
Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) fell at the No. 1 doubles spot to Wentworth's Caitlyn Briggs and Caitlin Corcoran 8-1.
Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) dropped an 8-1 decision at the second doubles position to Emily Jodoin and Nicole McColgan.
Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) and Bethany Mohnkern (Petersburg, Pa.) absorbed an 8-4 loss to Laura Boyd and Nicole Mooney at the No .3 doubles slot.
The Leopards won five of the sixth singles matches to secure their second conference victory of the fall.
Burrello notched Eastern Nazarene's lone win in the match, prevailing in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 2 position. The junior conceded the first set 5-7 before bouncing back with a 7-6 victory in the second set. In the third-set super-tiebreaker, Burrello edged McColgan 11-9.
Steelman fell to Corcoran in straight sets at the top singles spot, 6-1, 6-1. Cressman absorbed a 6-0, 6-1 loss at the third singles position to Briggs while Tubbs was downed 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 4 singles match by Jodoin. Lariviere suffered a 6-2, 6-0 setback at the fifth slot to Boyd.
Playing in her final home match for the Lions, Mohnkern was edged at the sixth singles spot by Mooney 7-5, 6-4.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene hits the road for the final two matches of the season. The Lions will visit league-leading Endicott September 27 before closing out the campaign at Roger Williams October 1.
