Women’s Tennis Drops 8-1 Decision at Western New England
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene women's tennis team endured an 8-1 loss at Western New England Saturday.
The Lions sink to 1-9 on the season and 0-7 in Commonwealth Coast Conference matches. The Golden Bears improve to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in league play with the win.
Eastern Nazarene captured one win in doubles action as they headed into singles play trailing 2-1.
Juju Atwater (Weymouth, Mass.) and Sarah Layton (Bonney Lake, Wash.) posted an 8-6 victory at the second doubles position for the Lions.
Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Kathryn McLaughlin (Huntington Station, N.Y.) fell 8-3 at the top slot. Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) and Kelsey Waddle (Olathe, Kan.) suffered an 8-1 setback at the third doubles spot.
Western New England swept the six singles matches to secure its first conference win of the season.
McLaughlin dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision at the top singles position to Caleigh Curran. Burrello fell 6-1, 6-1 at the second spot to Linda Mustafa. Layton absorbed a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Joeanna Glantz and the third slot.
At the No. 4 position, Atwater endured a 6-2, 6-2 setback to Lindsey Brudvig. Waddle faltered at the No. 5 spot, falling to Kelly Byrnes 6-2, 6-4. Lariviere dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Corey St. Louis at the sixth slot.
Up next, the Lions will close out the 2013 campaign with their final home match October 2. Eastern Nazarene will take on Roger Williams on Senior Day when the program's lone senior, Atwater, will be recognized.
