Women’s Tennis Drops First Home Match to Nichols, 9-0
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback to Nichols in the first home match of the 2013 season. The Lions fall to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the loss. The Bison improve to 3-2 on the year and 2-0 in league play with the win.
Nichols jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the three doubles matches.
Juju Atwater (Weymouth, Mass.) and Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) dropped an 8-0 decision at the No. 1 doubles spot to Anna Dyakiv and Cristina Szepanski. Rookies Sarah Layton (Bonney Lake, Wash.) and Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) fell 8-3 at the second position to Katie Malloy and Samantha Rydell. Bethany Mohnkern (Petersburg, Pa.) and Jordan Price (Snow Hill, Md.) endured an 8-1 loss at the third slot.
The Bison claimed six singles wins to cap off the win and remain unbeaten in the conference.
Layton fell 6-0, 6-1 at the top spot while Burrello absorbed a 6-0, 6-0 loss at the No. 2 position. Atwater dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision at the third singles spot to Szepanski.
Lariviere and Mohnkern endured 6-0, 6-0 setbacks at the fourth and fifth singles slots, respectively. At the No. 6 position, Price fell to Michelle Keklik 6-1, 6-1.
Up next, the Lions will look to snap a three-match skid as they host Salve Regina September 18.
