Women’s Tennis Tripped Up at Gordon, Falls 8-1

WENHAM, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene women's tennis team endured an 8-1 loss on the road at Gordon Wednesday afternoon. The Lions slide to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Fighting Scots improved to 3-1 on the year and 1-0 in league matches with the win.
The home team seized a 2-1 edge at the end of doubles play, prevailing at the first and third doubles positions.
The Lions lone victory came at the No. 2 doubles slot as Juju Atwater (Weymouth, Mass.) and Kelsey Waddle (Olathe, Kan.) eked out a 9-8 win.
Sarah Layton (Bonney Lake, Wash.) and Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) fell 8-2 at the top doubles spot while Bethany Mohnkern (Petersburg, Pa.) and Hannah Lariviere (Biddeford, Maine) absorbed an 8-0 loss at the No. 3 position.
Gordon swept the six singles matches to seal its first conference win.
Layton dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision at the No. 1 singles spot and Burrello fell 6-0, 6-0 at the second position. Atwater suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss at the No. 3 slot to Cindi Flynn.
Waddle, Lariviere and Mohnkern all endured 6-1, 6-0 setbacks in singles play.
