Women’s Tennis Falls to Western New England on Senior Day

QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Western New England on Senior Day Friday. The Lions drop to 2-9 on the year and 0-7 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the loss. The win elevates the Golden Bears to 4-7 overall and 3-5 in league play.
Western New England claimed a pair of doubles wins to own a 2-1 lead at the start of singles action.
Playing in their final home match, seniors Sharon Lemire (Lyndeboro, N.H.) and Elise Sleeper (Sanford, Maine) posted an 8-4 victory at the top doubles spot. Senior Samantha Jones (Wareham, Mass.) and freshman Kathryn McLaughlin (Huntington Station, N.Y.) were edged 8-6 at the No. 2 position by Alysha Lesieur and Gillian Adams.
Monica Gonzalez (Somerville, Mass.) and Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) suffered an 8-1 loss at the third slot to Juliette Cormier and Kelly Byrnes.
The visitors picked up four wins in singles play to secure a 6-1 win in their final regular season contest.
Lemire prevailed 6-1 in the opening set at the No. 1 position by Linda Mustafa rallied to capture a pair of 6-3 decisions in the second and third frames.
Sleeper fell 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot to Lesieur while Jones endured a 6-2, 6-2 setback at the third slot. Gonzalez dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Byrnes at the No. 6 position.
McLaughlin sported a one-set lead at the No. 4 slot and trailed in the second 2-3 when the match was halted due to darkness. The rookie tallied a 6-3 victory in the first set over Michele Magliulo.
The Lions will close out the 2012 campaign on the road at Nichols October 6.
