Women’s Tennis Claims 6-3 Win at Newbury in Season Opener

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team defeated Newbury 6-3 in the 2012 season opener Thursday afternoon. The Lions begin the campaign owning a 1-0 overall record while the Nighthawks flutter to 0-2 on the fall.
Newbury jumped out to a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. Juju Atwater (Weymouth, Mass.) and Kelsey Waddle (Olathe, Kan.) combined to capture Eastern Nazarene's lone doubles win, earning an 8-0 victory at the No. 3 position.
The Lions roared back in singles action, racking up five wins to pick up their first victory of the season.
Sharon Lemire (Lyndeboro, N.H.) posted a 7-5, 6-3 win at the top slot while Elise Sleeper (Sanford, Maine) prevailed 6-1, 7-5 at the second spot. Freshman Kathryn McLaughlin (Huntington Station, N.Y.) edged Newbury's Julie MacLeod 6-1, 7-6 at the No. 4 position.
Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and Atwater each cruised to 6-0, 6-0 victories at the fifth and sixth singles slots, respectively, for the visitors.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will visit Salve Regina September 8 to kick off Commonwealth Coast Conference action.
