NEW LONDON, Conn.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team dropped a narrow 2-1 decision at Mitchell Thursday afternoon in the final regular-season contest.
The Lions move to 3-12-0 on the year and 0-3-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference with the setback. The Mariners improve to 5-8-2 overall and 1-1-1 in league competition with the win.
The hosts seized a 1-0 lead in the final seconds of the first half. Gemma Landry converted a penalty kick in the 45th minute to net her first goal of the season.
Eastern Nazarene chalked up five shots in the opening frame while Mitchell managed a pair of attempts.
The Mariners stretched their advantage to 2-0 with a strike 25 seconds into the second stanza. Jessica Krupnikoff collected her first tally of the fall while Hannah Penn and Isabella Avalos both picked up assists.
The Lions got on the board in the 84th minute to trim the gap to 2-1. Diamond Best (Danvers, Mass.) buried her third goal of the season, volleying in a cross from Beatriz de Oliveira Segato (Malden, Mass.).
The visitors racked up 20 shots in the match and finished with a 3-0 margin in corner kicks earned. The home side manufactured six shots on the day.
Sophia Fevola (Wellington, Fla.) made one save in her 13th start in net and Jasmine Arzu (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded one save in her sixth appearance.
Eastern Nazarene grabbed the No. 4 seed in the New England Collegiate Conference Tournament and will travel to face top-seeded Lesley November 3.
