Women’s Soccer Opens NECC Slate with 7-0 Win at Mitchell
NEW LONDON, Conn.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team coasted to a 7-0 victory at Mitchell in the first New England Collegiate Conference match of the fall.
The Lions improve to 3-3-0 on the year and 1-0-0 in league action with the outcome. The Mariners sink to 0-5-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the NECC.
The visitors got on the board early to snag a 1-0 lead. Emily Forstrom (St. Paul, Minn.) netted her fourth goal of the season in the third minute off of a setup by Kyndall Fry (Tampa, Fla.).
Eastern Nazarene extended its advantage to 2-0 in the 26th minute. Victoria Hern (Salem, N.H.) picked up her fourth tally of the season while Diamond Best (Danvers, Mass.) registered an assist.
The Lions added a score in the 32nd minute to stretch the margin to 3-0. Sam Bernardi (Longmeadow, Mass.) collected her team-leading ninth marker of the fall with an unassisted strike.
The guests pushed their lead to 4-0 in the 44th minute on an own goal.
Eastern Nazarene dominated with 22 shots while holding Mitchell to zero attempts in the first half.
The Lions widened the gap to 5-0 in the 72nd minute as Best pounced on a loose ball inside the box and buried her fifth goal of the year.
Eastern Nazarene tacked on a goal in the 76th minute to push its advantage to 6-0. Best notched her second tally of the game with a long-distance effort to record her sixth tally of the fall.
The visitors chalked up their seventh score of the day to expand their lead to 7-0 on Bernardi's second marker of the game and 10th of the season in the 77th minute.
The Lions racked up 43 shot attempts while the Mariners mustered one shot on the afternoon.
Rookie Sarah Moschini (Upton, Mass.) posted her first collegiate clean sheet with a save-less outing.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene hosts Southern Vermont September 22 in the first home contest of the season.
