SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team narrowly fell at Western New England Saturday afternoon 2-1 after conceding a late goal.
The Lions slide to 1-5-0 on the season and 0-2-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Golden Bears improve to 2-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in league play.
Western New England opened the scoring in the 31st minute to seize a 1-0 edge. Christina Delude crossed the ball from the left flank and Maddie Morgan fired a shot into the bottom right corner to pick up her second tally of the fall.
Eastern Nazarene responded with an equalizer in the 42nd minute. Kelly Couite (West Bridgewater, Mass.) notched her team-leading fourth goal of the season as she curled a corner kick into the back of the net.
The guests recorded three shots in the opening stanza and the home team fired seven shots.
The Golden Bears reclaimed a one-goal advantage in the 87th minute, 2-1. Delude earned her second assist of the game as Brooke Labrie buried her third goal of the year.
Eastern Nazarene registered five shots on the day while Western New England attempted 12.
Anastasia Swift (Morrisville, Vt.) finished with a pair of saves between the posts for the Lions. Marissa Veilleux stopped three shots in net for the hosts.
"The team played well and competed in a tight match. We had chances to score in the second half but ran out of gas," said head coach Bob Meals.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene returns home to host Wheelock September 19.
