Women’s Soccer Edges Gordon 2-1 on Hevy’s Late Heroics
WENHAM, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team topped Gordon 2-1 on a late goal off the head of senior Lauren Hevy (North Brookefield, Mass.) in a thrilling Commonwealth Coast Conference clash Saturday.
The Lions improve to 5-6-1 on the year and 2-3-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the win. The Fighting Scots fall to 3-5-3 overall and 1-3-1 in league play with the loss.
The hosts struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. Lauren Hayes notched her second tally of the season off of an assist by Tori Caswell.
The visitors responded with the equalizer in the 26th minute. Justine Buchanan (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) collected her third score of the fall.
The two squads headed into the halftime intermission knotted at 1-1 with Eastern Nazarene holding a narrow 7-6 margin in shots.
With less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation and overtime looming, the Lions late push generated a quality scoring opportunity. Eastern Nazarene capitalized on the chance to snag a 2-1 lead. Hevy headed home a cross by Katherine Lawrence (Marlborough, Conn.) for her second marker of the year.
The Lions finished with 10 shots on the afternoon while the Fighting Scots recorded 13.
Senior netminder Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) made six saves for Eastern Nazarene in the contest. McKenzie Dion registered a pair of saves in goal for Gordon.
Up next, the Lions return home to square off against Salve Regina October 17 on Homecoming weekend. The Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer program will honor its senior class prior to kick-off at 11:00 am.
