Women’s Soccer Fends Off Wentworth, 1-0, in CCC Matchup
BOSTON, Mass.- Senior Jules Speno's (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) first-half goal was all the offense needed as the Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team collected a 1-0 victory at Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday.
The win lifts the Lions to 5-7-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Leopards slip to 5-5-1 on the year and 1-3-0 in league play with the loss.
Speno fired a direct free kick from just outside the penalty box into the lower right corner of the cage to give the visitors a 1-0 edge in the 25th minute. The goal marked Speno's second tally of the 2014 campaign.
At the midway point of the match, Eastern Nazarene clung to the 1-0 lead. The Lions manufactured seven shots in the opening stanza while Wentworth attempted six.
The Lions clamped down in the second half to preserve the shutout victory.
Each side registered six shots in the second 45 minutes of action while the Leopards finished with a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Speno led all players with six shots in the match and four efforts on target. Hannah Scahill (Quaker Hill, Conn.) recorded three shots on the day for the guests.
Junior Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) stopped all six shots she faced in goal for the Lions as she posted her second shutout of the fall and 12th career clean sheet.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will visit Brandeis October 7. The Judges were receiving votes in this week's NSCAA National Poll.
