Scahill’s OT Strike Sends Women’s Soccer Past Wheaton, 2-1
QUINCY, Mass.- Sophomore Hannah Scahill (Quaker Hill, Conn.) netted the golden goal just one minute into overtime to propel the Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Wheaton Thursday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Lions' first-ever win over the Lyons escalate them to 3-3-0 on the year. Wheaton, ranked No. 6 in the NSCAA Regional Rankings, falls to 3-2-0 overall with the loss.
Eastern Nazarene nearly found the back of the net early on in the eighth minute as Kelly Couite (West Bridgewater, Mass.) rang a long-distance shot off of the crossbar.
Wheaton opened the scoring moments later to take a 1-0 lead. Gabriella Verde latched onto the end of a cross by Aunyes Hermantin and volleyed the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
The Lions trailed by a goal at the midway point of the match. Eastern Nazarene produced three shots in the first frame while the guests recorded nine. The Lyons held a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks earned through 45 minutes of action.
The Lions knotted the match in the 85th minute as Kyera Bryant (Guilford, Conn.) buried her first collegiate score. Couite served up a corner kick and Tina Corey (Canterbury, Conn.) headed it back towards the near post. Bryant pounced on the loose ball and poked it in.
Wheaton nearly came up with a last-second goal but Lauren Kett (Norwich, England) blocked Caren McCarthy's on the doorstep to keep the game leveled.
Just 60 seconds into the extra session, Sam Williams (Forest Hill, Md.) crossed the ball to Scahill at the top of the penalty box and the sophomore fired a shot into the lower right corner of the cage. The game-winning tally was Scahill's third marker of the fall.
Eastern Nazarene registered 11 shots on the night while Wheaton finished the game with 18.
Junior goalkeeper Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) turned aside five shots in the match for the Lions while Ali Hinton recorded three saves in goal for the Lyons.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene opens league play September 13 on the road at Western New England.
