Women’s Soccer Wins Come-from-Behind Thriller over Suffolk, 2-1
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene women's soccer team rallied from a goal down in the second half to earn a 2-1 victory over Suffolk Tuesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The win elevates the Lions to 2-3-0 on the year. The Rams drop to 1-2-0 overall with the result.
The guests grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute as Alexandra Nagri notched her second goal of the season. Jennifer Martin collected her third assist of the year as her through-ball behind the Eastern Nazarene defense setup Nagri's score.
The Lions trailed by a goal at halftime despite outshooting the Rams 16-4 in the opening stanza.
In the second half, Eastern Nazarene bombarded the Suffolk goal with a barrage of shot attempts to level the match.
The Lions broke through in the 77th minute as Alexis Schmidt (North Smithfield, R.I.) booted home the equalizer for her first score of the season. Maleesa Santos (Colonie, N.Y.) sent the ball into a crowd inside the penalty area before the ball fell to the feet of Schmidt.
Hannah Scahill (Quaker Hill, Conn.) gave the home side a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute with her team-leading second marker of the year. Santos picked up her second assist on the day as her pass setup Scahill's score. The sophomore fired a right-footed shot the snuck by the Suffolk goalkeeper's fingertips and inside the right post for the game-winner.
Eastern Nazarene finished the game with an astounding 40 total shots with just 14 being on frame. The Rams were held to five shots in the contest but were able to target four on goal.
Katherine Lawrence (Marlborough, Conn.) and Jules Speno (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) paced the Lions with eight shots apiece. Kelly Couite (West Bridgewater, Mass.), Lawrence and Scahill each recorded three shots on goal in the win.
Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) made three saves in net for Eastern Nazarene. On the opposite end of the pitch, Melissa Brouillette turned aside 12 shots in goal for the visitors.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene wraps up a three-game home stand September 11 against Wheaton in a rematch of last fall's ECAC Tournament quarterfinals.
