Women’s Soccer Drops OT Thriller at Roger Williams
BRISTOL, R.I.- Despite a pair of goals from junior Jules Speno (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), the Eastern Nazarene women's soccer team endured a narrow 3-2 overtime-loss at Roger Williams Saturday afternoon.
The Lions move to 8-3-0 on the season and 1-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the result. The Hawks rise to 9-2-1 overall and 3-1 in the league with the win.
The home team jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Katie Lydon fired a shot into the left corner of the cage for her eighth of the season after Julie Loewenstein provided the assist.
Roger Williams doubled its advantage to 2-0 in the 31st minute of play as Lydon tallied her second marker of the match.
Eastern Nazarene answered with a score in the 35th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1. Speno notched her ninth goal of the fall as she tucked a shot into the right corner of the goal. Katherine Lawrence (Marlborough, Conn.) picked up her fourth helper on the tally.
The two squads each registered four shots in the opening period while the Hawks earned the lone corner kick awarded.
The Lions evened the game at 2-2 in the 71st minute as Speno notched an unassisted strike, burying a shot from the left side of the penalty box.
At the end of regulation, Eastern Nazarene owned a 12-10 edge in shots while the corner kick count was even at 3-3.
Roger Williams netted the golden goal in the 94th minute as Lydon scored her third of the game. The Hawks were awarded a penalty kick after the referee deemed a home player was taken down inside the box. Lydon converted the penalty kick for the game-winning goal.
The visitors concluded the match with a 12-11 margin in shots while the home team held a 4-3 gap in corners.
Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) turned aside two shots in goal for the Lions in the contest.
Hannah Scahill (Quaker Hill, Conn.), Sam Williams (Forest Hill, Md.) and Lawrence all recorded three shots on the afternoon. Williams paced Eastern Nazarene with three shots on target.
