Lawrence, Scahill Tally Two as Women’s Soccer Downs Regis, 5-0
QUINCY, Mass.- Rookies Katherine Lawrence (Marlborough, Conn.) and Hannah Scahill (Quaker Hill, Conn.) each found the back of the net twice to propel the Eastern Nazarene women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Regis Tuesday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Lions claimed their third-consecutive shutout to improve to 5-1-0 on the season. The Pride falls to 2-2-1 overall with the loss.
The Lions seized a 1-0 edge in the 13th minute. After the visitor's goalkeeper came out to punch away a bouncing ball, Lawrence one-timed a shot into the net from beyond the 18-yard box for her third marker of the season.
Eastern Nazarene stretched its lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute of play. Lawrence buried her second goal of the night and fourth of the year, firing a left-footed strike into the right side of the cage.
The hosts extended the gap to three in the 40th minute. Jules Speno (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) poked home a loose ball inside the six-yard box to pick up her team-leading eighth tally of the fall. Lawrence served a corner kick into the box before Lauren Kett (Norwich, England) pushed a shot past the Regis goalkeeper and Speno was on the doorstep for the simple finish.
The Lions held a 15-3 margin in first-half shots and a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. Eastern Nazarene earned all three corner kicks awarded in the opening stanza.
Eastern Nazarene tacked on its fourth score of the contest in the early stages of the second half. Scahill raced past a defender to corral a loose ball inside the 18-yard box. With her back to the goal on the left side, Scahill swiveled around the defender and sent a shot into the side-netting inside of the right post to record her sixth marker of the fall.
The Lions struck for the fifth time in the match as Scahill potted her second of the game and seventh of the year to give the home side a 5-0 lead. Savannah Sivert (Laytonsville, Md.) slotted a through-ball down the right side for Scahill to run onto in the 60th minute. The freshman dribbled around a defender to the top of the penalty area before rifling a left-footed attempt into the right corner of the goal.
Eastern Nazarene finished the match with 26 shots while limiting Regis to just three attempts.
Sophomore Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) turned away two shots to garner her fourth victory of the season and third clean sheet between the pipes for the Lions. Sam Salamone turned in a 10-save effort in goal for the Pride.
Up next, the Lions travel to the Ocean State to battle Johnson & Wales September 19 in a non-league matchup before opening conference play at Curry Saturday, September 21.
