Women’s Soccer Blanks Mount Ida in Season-Opener, 4-0
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene women’s soccer team registered a 4-0 victory over Mount Ida at Veterans Memorial Stadium in the first match of the 2013 campaign.
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene women's soccer team registered a 4-0 victory over Mount Ida at Veterans Memorial Stadium in the first match of the 2013 campaign. The Lions start the season at 1-0-0 while the Mustangs move to 0-1-0 overall.
The hosts controlled the first half which yielded no score. The Lions outshot the visitors 8-0 in the first frame. Eastern Nazarene also earned seven corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes of action while conceding zero.
The Lions had two good scoring chances in the first half. Abby Spitler (Gaithersburg, Md.) saw her shot go wide after dribbling around the Mount Ida goalkeeper. Later in the period, Savannah Sivert (Laytonsville, Md.) rang a one-time shot off of the crossbar.
Eastern Nazarene got on the board in the 57th minute as Katherine Lawrence (Marlborough, Conn.) netted her first collegiate goal. Lawrence raced past a defender to control a loose ball before firing a shot past the Mustangs' goalkeeper and into right side of the cage.
The Lions doubled their advantage just moments later in the 58th minute. Victoria Ferland (Brooklyn, Conn.) curled a free kick into the box from the right sideline. Ferland's service bounced over the visitors' goalkeeper and Jules Speno (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) directed the ball into the back of the net.
The home side tacked on its third goal of the afternoon in the 84th minute of play. Freshman Hannah Scahill (Quaker Hill, Conn.) notched her first career tally to give Eastern Nazarene a 3-0 lead. After Scahill's first shot was blocked by a defender, the rookie corralled the ball and buried a shot in the right side of the goal.
Minutes later in the 86th minute, Scahill struck again to extend the Lions' advantage to 4-0. Speno slotted a through-ball to Scahill down the right flank. Scahill dribbled towards the goal before rifling a shot inside the near post for her second marker of the match.
Eastern Nazarene finished with a commanding 25-4 edge in shots while owning a 14-1 margin in corner kicks.
Lions goalkeeper Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) needed just one save to secure her first clean sheet of the season. Rebecca Beaulieu stopped six shots between the posts for Mount Ida.
