QUINCY, Mass. – In the final non-conference tilt of the regular season, the Eastern Nazarene College women’s soccer team topped Suffolk 3-1 Wednesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
QUINCY, Mass. – In the final non-conference tilt of the regular season, the Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team topped Suffolk 3-1 Wednesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. With the result, the Lions improve to 6-6-2 overall while the Rams drop to 4-9.
Eastern Nazarene seized a one-goal advantage just 8:55 into the match. Senior Morgan Goodney (East Greenwich, R.I.) dribbled to the endline on the left side of the field before serving a pass across the face of the cage. Freshman Lauren Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) crashed the back post and buried her first collegiate marker with a one-time finish.
The Rams netted an equalizer in the 22nd minute to knot the score at 1-1. BInglei Zhou rolled a shot from the right side of the penalty area into the left side of the net for her second tally of the season.
At the break, Eastern Nazarene sported a 7-5 lead in shots while earning both corner kicks awarded in the opening frame.
The Lions broke the 1-1 tie in the 79th minute as Tina Corey (Canterbury, Conn.) restored the one-score advantage. Jules Speno (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) floated a cross from the right side for Corey to run onto from the left side. The sophomore headed the ball into the net for her third goal of the season.
In the 83rd minute, Speno stretched the home side's lead to 3-1 with her team-leading seventh tally of the year. She received the ball in the middle of the park and turned towards goal before firing a shot into the lower right corner of the cage from 30 yards out. Junior Erin Daley (Byfield, Mass.) registered her second assist of the season on Speno's strike.
Eastern Nazarene finished the contest with a 22-8 gap in shots after outshooting Suffolk 15-3 in the second stanza.
Speno paced all players with 13 shots in the match, three of which were on target.
In goal, rookie Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) stopped three shots for the Lions en route to her sixth win of the 2012 campaign. Melissa Brouillette made five saves between the pipes for the Rams on the day.
