BOSTON, Mass.- Sophomore Jules Speno (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) netted a pair of goals and freshman Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) made five saves to propel the Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team to its first win of the year, blanking Wentworth 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
The Lions reach 1-5 on the season and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the victory, its first in nine trips to Sweeney Field. The Leopards slide to 1-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in league play with the loss.
"Our back four played well today and Kristen had great command of her box. Today's win was a great team effort," said sixth-year head coach Steve Hamilton.
The two squads played an even opening 45 minutes as each side registered four shots and no goals.
Speno broke the scoreless tie in the 49th minute with her first marker of the year. The sophomore made a long run down the left wing to collect a feed from Amelia Gonzales (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) before firing a shot past the home team's goalkeeper and into the left side of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 edge. Gonzales recorded her second assist of the year of the visitors' opening score.
Less than six minutes later, Speno doubled Eastern Nazarene's advantage with her second tally of the match. Speno's found the back of the net with a shot from the left side of the box to lift the Lions ahead 2-0. Erin Daley (Byfield, Mass.) picked up her first helper of the season on the goal.
Freshman Lauren Avery (Colrain, Mass.) capped off the scoring with her second of the season. Avery broke in on goal alone and beat the onrushing keeper to give the visitors a 3-0 lead in the 75th minute.
Eastern Nazarene finished the contest with 12 shots, led by Avery with five attempts. Wentworth matched the Lions with 12 bids on the day while earning all four corner kicks awarded in the match.
With five stops between the pipes for Eastern Nazarene, Farley notched her first collegiate win and shutout Saturday afternoon.
The Lions continue their season-opening eight-game road swing September 18 with their seventh-straight away match, traveling to face Regis in non-league action.
