Women’s Basketball Drops 71-49 Decision at Mitchell
NEW LONDON, Conn.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team suffered a 71-49 setback at league-leading Mitchell Tuesday evening.
The Lions dip to 11-4 on the year and 6-2 in the New England Collegiate Conference with the result. The Mariners improve to 9-5 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play at 8-0 with the win.
Kyra Fleharty (Lewistown, Mont.) finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and collecting 13 rebounds. Stella Dulay (Santa Maria, Calif.) chipped in with nine points off the bench. Tia Torio (Manteca, Calif.) notched eight points and five boards.
The home side established an 11-3 lead with 2:26 left to play in the first quarter on a layup by Amina Wiley.
Mitchell sported a 17-9 advantage through 10 minutes of action.
The Mariners chalked up nine-straight points to start the second frame, extending their lead to 26-9 with 7:01 remaining in the quarter.
The hosts outscored the visitors 25-10 in the second period to own a 42-19 lead at the halftime intermission.
Mitchell widened the margin to 30 with 4:04 to go in the third, 58-28, on a bucket by Le'Sandra Turner.
Eastern Nazarene trimmed the deficit to 60-42 on a layup by Torio just before the buzzer.
The Lions managed seven points in the fourth quarter while the Mariners mustered 11 to secure their eighth league win in a row.
The Lions shot 28.1% from the floor and just 22.2% from beyond the arc on the night. The Mariners posted a field-goal percentage of 48.5% to go with 30.8% from three-point distance in the game.
Wiley posted a double-double with 18 points and 15 boards to lead Mitchell. Turner finished with 17 points while Kate McCormack added 10 points and seven assists.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene returns home to battle Bay Path for the first time in program history January 22.
