Women’s Basketball Falls at Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 64-51
MAYAGUEZ, P.R.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team dropped a 64-51 decision at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Saturday.
The Lions slip to 8-2 overall with the result while the Janes improve to 1-6 on the year.
Tia Torio (Manteca, Calif.) led the squad with 15 points while adding six rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Kyra Fleharty (Lewistown, Mont.) posted 12 points and four boards. Courtney Barba (Pismo Beach, Calif.) finished with five points while Stella Dulay (Santa Maria, Calif.) added four points off the bench.
The visitors trailed 19-12 after the opening 10 minutes of the contest.
Eastern Nazarene outscored Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 17-15 in the second frame to cut the deficit to 34-29 at the halftime intermission.
The Lions mustered six points in the third quarter while the Janes erupted for 21 points to extend their lead to 55-35.
Eastern Nazarene tallied 16 points in the fourth and Puerto Rico-Mayaguez netted nine in the final period to earn its first victory of the season.
The Lions shot 28.9% from the floor and 35.7% from three-point range in the game. The home side finished with a field-goal percentage of 31.3% and connected on just 4-of-19 from behind the arc on the afternoon.
Itamar Rosado paced the Janes with 18 points and Gladiana Rivera notched a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene opens the 2019 calendar year with a non-conference clash against Simmons January 4 at the Lahue Physical Education Center.
