Women’s Basketball Drops 63-50 Decision at University of New England
BIDDEFORD, Maine- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team endured a 63-50 loss at the University of New England Wednesday evening.
The Lions move to 10-10 on the season and 4-10 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the result. The Nor'easters improve to 14-5 overall and 10-2 in league play with the win.
Shelby Holmes (Seeley Lake, Mont.) netted a team-high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the contest. Kayla Torio (Manteca, Calif.) finished with 11 points, eight boards, and five assists. Michelle Detwiler (Elkhart, Ind.) collected 11 rebounds while Alyssa Cosio Murillo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) chipped in with seven points and four boards.
The visitors bolted out of the gate and opened up a 16-2 lead with 3:42 left to play in the first quarter. Eastern Nazarene started the game 6-of-10 from the floor while limiting the University of New England to just one field goal on 14 attempts.
The Lions sported a 22-6 advantage after connecting on 5-of-6 from three-point range in the first frame.
The home team strung together a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 25-16 with 4:01 remaining in the second quarter.
The Nor'easters outscored Eastern Nazarene 19-7 in the second period as the Lions clung to a 29-25 edge at halftime.
Eastern Nazarene shot 45.8% from the floor and 50% from behind the arc in the first half. The University of New England posted a field-goal percentage of 24.3% in the opening two quarters and was held to just 1-for-11 shooting from long distance.
Holmes paced the visitors with 12 points and four boards at the break while Cosio Murillo added seven points and Detwiler hauled in eight rebounds.
With 8:19 to go in the third quarter, the Nor'easters captured their first lead of the night on a trey by Sam MacDonald, 30-29.
The hosts widened the gap to 10 points on a layup and free throw by Olivia Shaw with 2:46 left to play in the third, 47-37.
The Lions trailed 52-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
The University of New England edged Eastern Nazarene 11-9 in fourth-quarter scoring to earn its 10th conference victory of the year.
The Lions shot 33.9% from the floor and 31% from beyond the three-point line. The Nor'easters finished with a field-goal percentage of 35.2% to go with 14.3% shooting from downtown.
Shaw paced the University of New England with a double-double as she notched 23 points and 15 rebounds.
