Women’s Basketball Falls at Roger Williams, 75-62
BRISTOL, R.I.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team absorbed a 75-62 loss at Roger Williams Thursday evening.
The Lions drop to 7-6 on the year and 1-5 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the setback. The Hawks improve to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in league contests.
Kayla Torio (Manteca, Calif.) poured in 21 points and gathered nine rebounds to lead the team. Jacquelin Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) chipped in with 11 points off the bench. Shelby Holmes (Seeley Lake, Mont.) finished with nine points, eight boards, and six assists. Michelle Detwiler (Elkhart, Ind.) registered six points, nine rebounds, and a pair of blocks in the game.
The home team opened up a 10-0 lead with 6:20 to go in the first quarter and held a 22-9 advantage after 10 minutes of action.
The visitors cut the deficit to 29-22 on a trey by Arretche with 2:27 left to play in the second period.
Eastern Nazarene trailed Roger Williams 34-24 at the midway point of the game.
The Lions shot 32.3% from the floor and 44.4% from behind the arc in the first half. The Hawks posted a field-goal percentage of 50% to go with 3-of-7 shooting from long range in the opening two quarters.
The guests chipped away at the margin and pulled to within four points as Detwiler tossed in a left-handed layup with 7:57 remaining in the third.
Roger Williams regained a double-digit lead with 2:04 to go in the third frame on a layup by Teagan Dunn, 49-39.
The Hawks extended the margin to 56-41 at the end of the third period and began the fourth quarter with a basket to widen the gap to 17 points.
Holmes canned a three-pointer as Eastern Nazarene narrowed the margin to 66-58 with 2:40 remaining in regulation.
The home team converted 4-of-8 free throw attempts down the stretch to earn the win.
The Lions finished with a field-goal percentage of 38.6% while connecting on 8-of-24 from beyond the three-point line. The Hawks shot 48.3% on the night, including 29.4% from downtown.
