Women’s Basketball Falls to Judges in Brandeis Tip-Off Tournament Championship Game, 63-51
WALTHAM, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team absorbed a 63-51 loss to Brandeis in the championship game of the Brandeis Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Lions drop to 2-1 on the year with the setback while the Judges improve to 2-1 overall with the win.
Michelle Detwiler (Elkhart, Ind.) and Jacquelin Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) each scored 13 points to lead the visitors . Shelby Holmes (Seeley Lake, Mont.) and Seniesha Sekaquaptewa (Scottsdale, Ariz.) both notched eight points in the contest. Detwiler and Tia Torio were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
The home side utilized an early 9-0 run to grab a 9-3 lead with 4:32 remaining in the first quarter.
The guests cut the deficit to 9-8 with 3:44 left to play in the opening period as Detwiler banked in a layup.
Brandeis chalked up the final six points of the first frame to hold a 19-10 lead at the start of the second quarter.
The Judges widened the margin to 30-14 on a layup by Hannah Nicholson with 3:54 to go in the second period.
Eastern Nazarene trailed 34-19 at the midway point of the game after shooting 32% from the floor through two quarters of action.
The hosts extended their lead to 23 points with 4:47 left to play in the third as Eva Hart sank two free throws, 48-25.
The Lions tallied six unanswered points to close out the third quarter to trim the gap to 52-33 heading into the fourth frame.
Eastern Nazarene outscored Brandeis 18-11 in the fourth but the Judges held on to capture the Tip-Off Tournament title.
The Lions concluded the contest with a field-goal percentage of 36.2% while connecting on 35.3% of their three-point attempts. The Judges shot 44.3% from the floor and just 21.4% from behind the arc on the day.
Katie Goncalo poured in 18 points to pace Brandeis while Nicholson, the tournament MVP, recorded 16 points and nine rebounds.
