Women’s Basketball Overpowers UMaine-Presque Isle, 56-27
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team breezed by the University of Maine-Presque Isle, 56-27, Thursday evening in non-conference action at the Lahue Physical Education Center.
The Lions improve to 14-6 on the season, matching the highest single-season win total since 2000. The Owls flutter to 4-13 overall with the outcome.
BreAnna Fraser (Henderson, Nev.) poured in a game-high 12 points to go with three assists. Ashley Rendon (La Puente, Calif.) chipped in with seven points while Michelle Detwiler (Elkhart, Ind.) grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds and netted five points. Jaysa Cooper (Frisco, Texas) finished with 10 boards and six points off the bench.
The home side surged out to a 13-2 lead with 4:16 remaining in the first quarter.
Eastern Nazarene capped off the opening frame with three free throws to boast a 16-5 advantage.
The Lions widened the gap to 17 points, 22-5, with a 6-0 run in the opening five minutes of the second period while holding Maine-Presque Isle scoreless for seven minutes.
The Owls closed out the second quarter with a 5-2 stretch as the hosts sported a 24-10 lead at intermission.
Eastern Nazarene shot 29.6% from the field in the first half while Maine-Presque Isle was limited to 12% shooting from the floor through two quarters.
The home team grew its lead to 23 points after beginning the third period with 11 consecutive points. A pair of free throws by Amanda Cuervo (Whittier, Calif.) with 4:42 left to play in the quarter pushed the Lions advantage to 35-12.
Eastern Nazarene chalked up the final nine points of the third frame to control a 44-16 lead heading into the fourth.
The Lions extended the margin to 34 with 3:28 to go as Amber Amortegui (Davie, Fla.) knocked down a jumper, 52-18.
The hosts concluded the contest with a shooting percentage of 28.4% to go with 36.4% shooting from beyond the arc. The Owls shot 20.4% from the floor on the night and just 15.8% from long range.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene resumes conference play February 4 at home against Salve Regina. The Lions will honor the program's Class of 2017 prior to tip-off.
