Women’s Basketball Triumphs 62-40 at Wentworth
BOSTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team collected a 62-40 victory at Wentworth Tuesday evening.
The Lions improve to 13-6 on the year and 7-6 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the win. The Leopards drop to 2-18 overall and 0-13 in league competition with the result.
Shelby Holmes (Seeley Lake, Mont.) led the squad with 12 points while adding six rebounds. Kayla Torio (Manteca, Calif.) posted 11 points and seven boards. Amanda Cuervo (Whittier, Calif.) finished with seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Bailee Smith (Plano, Texas) registered eight points and nine boards on the night.
After the visiting team opened the contest with a three-pointer by Torio, the hosts rattled off eight consecutive points to grab an 8-3 lead with 5:31 remaining in the first period.
Eastern Nazarene responded with back-to-back treys by Jacquelin Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) to seize a narrow one-point edge, 9-8, with 4:48 to go in the opening frame.
Wentworth held a slim margin at the conclusion of 10 minutes of play, 11-10.
The Lions started the second quarter with an 8-2 run to claim an 18-13 advantage with 6:18 left to play in the first half.
Eastern Nazarene stretched its lead to 11 with 3:11 on the clock on Torio splashed her third three-pointer of the game, 26-15.
The guests capped off the second period with an 8-1 string to boast a 34-16 halftime-advantage.
The Lions shot 34.5 percent from the floor in the first half while the Leopards owned a field-goal percentage of 20.7.
Eastern Nazarene outscored Wentworth 16-9 in the third quarter to widen the gap to 50-25.
The Lions extended their lead to 29 with 8:06 to go in the fourth on a basket by Smith, 54-25.
The visitors maintained a 20-point advantage throughout the final period to collect their 13th win of the season.
Eastern Nazarene finished with a field-goal percentage of 40.0% to go with 6-for-15 shooting from beyond the arc. Wentworth shot 20.7% from the floor and connected on just 1-of-12 from the perimeter.
Looking ahead, the Lions return home to battle Maine-Presque Isle in a non-conference clash February 2.
