Women’s Basketball Grabs 72-59 Win Over Gordon Wednesday
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team returned to the win column with a 72-59 victory over Gordon Wednesday evening at the Lahue Physical Education Center.
The Lions improve to 12-5 on the year and 6-5 in Commonwealth Coast Conference competition. The Fighting Scots fall to 6-12 overall and 4-7 in league play with the result.
Amanda Cuervo (Whittier, Calif.) poured in a team-best 15 points and grabbed four boards. Shelby Holmes (Seeley Lake, Mont.) notched 11 points and six rebounds. Kayla Torio (Manteca, Calif.) recorded 10 points, six boards, and four assists in the contest. Jaysa Cooper (Frisco, Texas) contributed with nine points and six rebounds off the bench while Jacquelin Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) added eight points.
The home side chalked up the first seven points of the game to establish an early 7-0 edge with 7:26 to go in the first quarter.
The visitors cut the deficit to 17-15 with 46 seconds left in the opening frame on a layup by Meghan Foley.
Eastern Nazarene held a 19-15 edge after 10 minutes of action as Cooper banked in a layup in the waning seconds of the first period.
The Lions extended their advantage to double-digits with 7:45 remaining in the second quarter on a basket by Torio, 25-15.
The hosts sported a 36-25 lead at the halftime intermission after outscoring Gordon 17-10 in the second frame.
Eastern Nazarene stretched the gap to 21 points with 4:06 left to play in the third on a layup by Cooper, 53-32.
The Lions held a 59-42 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Eastern Nazarene maintained a double-figure lead throughout the final frame to earn its 12th win of the season and snap a two-game skid.
The Lions shot 43.3% from the floor and 41.7% from the perimeter on the night. The Fighting Scots finished with a field-goal percentage of 34.8% while draining just 2-of-19 from three-point range.
Gordon was led by Foley with 20 points off the bench.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene travels to Bristol, Rhode Island to battle conference-frontrunner Roger Williams January 28.
