Women’s Basketball Wins Midweek Tilt at Nichols, 66-55
DUDLEY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team notched a 66-55 win at Nichols Wednesday evening.
The Lions elevate to 10-3 on the season and 4-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the victory. The Bison slide to 1-12 overall and 1-6 in league action with the outcome.
Shelby Holmes (Seeley Lake, Mont.) netted a game-high 14 points and hauled in four boards. Jacquelin Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) also poured in 14 points off the bench as she drained four shots from beyond the arc. BreAnna Fraser (Henderson, Nev.) finished with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals on the night. Ashley Rendon (La Puente, Calif.) chipped in with 11 points and three boards while Kayla Torio (Manteca, Calif.) grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds to go with six assists and four points.
The guests established an 11-point lead in the first quarter as Holmes capped a 7-0 run with a layup with 2:56 remaining in the period, 17-6.
Nichols chalked up the final six points of the opening quarter to cut Eastern Nazarene's advantage to 20-15 after 10 minutes of play.
The Lions regained a double-digit lead with 6:29 to go in the second after a trey and a layup by Rendon, 27-17.
Eastern Nazarene sported a 38-30 advantage at the midway point of the contest.
The Bison started the second half with a 12-2 run as they snagged a 42-40 edge with 4:07 left to play in the third.
The Lions hung onto a 49-46 lead heading into the fourth frame after Amanda Cuervo (Whittier, Calif.) tallied the visitors' final six points of the third.
Eastern Nazarene utilized a 7-0 stretch to push its lead to 59-50 with 5:41 remaining in regulation.
The guests outscored the home team 17-9 in the final period to seal their 10th victory of the season.
The Lions finished with a field-goal percentage of 41.0% while also connecting on 9-of-27 attempts from the perimeter. The Bison shot 36.1% from the floor and just 13.3% from long range.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene visits Western New England January 14.
