Women’s Basketball Surges Past Becker, 75-50
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team notched its sixth-consecutive non-conference victory Thursday evening, defeating Becker 75-50 at the Lahue Physical Education Center.
The Lions elevate to 6-2 on the year with the win while the Hawks flutter to 3-5 overall.
Shelby Holmes (Seeley Lake, Mont.) poured in 14 points off the bench while adding five rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Jacqueline Arretche (Los Banos, Calif.) finished with 12 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the charity stripe. BreAnna Fraser (Henderson, Nev.) netted 11 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out four assists. Sam Cary (Keller, Texas) posted nine points and nine boards on the night.
Eastern Nazarene erased an early four-point deficit, concluding the first quarter with six unanswered points. Jessica Franco (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Arretche both drained treys late in the opening period to give the home team a 14-8 lead after 10 minutes of action.
The Lions stretched their advantage to 11 points with 6:23 remaining in the second quarter on a fast-break layup by Holmes, 25-14.
The hosts pushed the margin to 19 just before the halftime intermission as Fraser knocked down a jumper with 17 seconds left to play in the second, 39-20.
Eastern Nazarene shot 44.4% from the field in the opening half and 26.7% from behind the arc. Becker posted a field-goal percentage of 40% while connecting on 2-of-6 attempts from long range in the first two quarters.
The Lions maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.
The home side outscored the Hawks 23-18 in the third frame to hold a 62-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Eastern Nazarene edged Becker in the fourth period 13-12 to register its sixth victory of the season.
The Lions shot 45.8% from the floor and 31.8% from three-point distance. The Hawks finished with a field-goal percentage of 36.7% to go with 5-for-16 shooting from the perimeter.
Cassidy Harrison and Kelsey Maynard finished with 11 points each to pace the visitors.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene jets off to the Sunshine State after the holiday break. The Lions will square off against NAIA foe Florida Memorial December 30.
