Women’s Hoops Clipped by Trinity in Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament Final
BROOKLYN, N.Y.- Playing in a rare Sunday contest, the Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team suffered a 51-45 setback to Trinity (Conn.) in the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament championship on the campus of Medgar Evers College.
The Lions move to 4-2 on the season with the loss while the Bantams improve to 4-0 overall.
Elia Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored a team-best 10 points and added six rebounds in the contest. Krystal Holl (Smithsburg, Md.) finished with eight points off the bench and five boards. Celina Calderon (Lompoc, Calif.) registered seven points, five assists and four rebounds while Jessica Franco (Phoenix, Ariz.) and BreAnna Fraser (Henderson, Nev.) each poured in seven points.
Trinity held a narrow 13-11 edge after the first quarter of play.
Eastern Nazarene trailed by five at halftime, 25-20, after managing nine second-period points.
The Lions shot 29% from the floor in the opening half while the Bantams connected on 30.6% of their field-goal attempts.
Eastern Nazarene snagged a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter, 34-33, after outscoring Trinity 14-8 in the third stanza.
The Bantams tallied 18 points in the fourth frame while limiting the Lions to 11 en route to capturing their fourth-straight win.
Eastern Nazarene concluded the game with a field-goal percentage of 32.3%. Trinity shot 28.1% from the floor on the day and sank 13-of-16 efforts from the free throw line. Each squad drained a pair of three-pointers on 13 attempts.
Mackenzie Griffin paced the Bantams with 29 points and 19 rebounds in the contest.
Salazar was selected to the All-Tournament Team after netting 10 points in both games for the Lions.
